      home group descriptions

2009-2010

Each of our home groups desire to build families whose mothers/wives walk with Jesus as they love their husbands and children in home atmospheres where learning can take place. They seek to do this by spending time in the Word of God together, praying for each other, and being sources of encouragement one to another.

What makes this group unique? We discuss Charlotte Mason's educational ideas mainly rallying around a literature-based education. We meet during the day because many of our moms find it difficult to get out in the evening. We have a wide range of ages of children; the older ones help take care of the little ones as the moms talk. Our children are developing friendships with each other at the park days. The children have the opportunity to present something they are learning to the whole group at the beginning of the park day.

Cornerstone seeks to encourage and equip women in their Christian home school lifestyle. Our mid-sized group provides support, networking and information -- essential ingredients for this calling. Cornerstone moms meet monthly to connect and build friendships. These times may include Saturday breakfast out, weeknight gathering for coffee, SELAH parents' night out or meeting in a home for prayer or fellowship. We strive to coordinate 2 service opportunities per year that incorporate children of all ages. With an emerging group of younger elementary-age children, we are looking for members to coordinate field trips or park days this year.

What makes this group unique? We call ourselves the "Low Maintenance Homeschool Group." Our group was created for moms who want to streamline commitments and activities or have extra demands on their time, such as a job, a family member with special needs, or children with a wide age range. One meeting a year we focus on how to better honor and love our husbands. We work hard to keep the "home" in homeschooling, encouraging our members to stay home and "declutter" their lives.

What makes this group unique? We are a group of families whose desire it is to seek the Lord Jesus Christ with our hearts, in our words, and in our actions. As one of our goals, we desire families to seek Jesus in all areas of our lives- not only education. Traveling along this path, we come together to encourage each other and to grow in wisdom and understanding. To accomplish this, we have the help of two mentor moms, Maggie Johnson and Eileen Shaffer who have homeschooled and graduated their children and will bring to the Seekers group a great deal of knowledge on family life and education. Our group also includes homeschooling dads.

Our desire is for our group to build lasting friendships that will span our schooling years and beyond. We encourage a safe, fun-filled, comfortable environment where we can come as we are and grow together. We want to provide a place where we as moms and dads can share the tough times along with the good times.

In Matthew 11: 29-30, Jesus said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” What a blessing to have a Lord and Savior who is gentle and gives us rest to our souls as we homeschool our children. In this homeschooling adventure, our blessings are great as we seek after Jesus to glorify Him in all we do.

General location of group: Sunnyvale, Campbell, Santa Clara

What makes this group unique? This group is a place where we share, provide support and find encouragement in our calling to nurture, teach, and train our children in the Lord as we walk along the road of home education. Each family is encouraged to seek the Lord in the "way" they should school their uniquely created children. You will find we don't emphasize any particular "curriculums", but encouragement for creative and natural learning to take place in our homes and with friends. We hope to provide ideas and activities to foster a living education through quality books, nature outings, park days, and field trips. We hope to encourage the "family" part of home-schooling by offering opportunities for occasional all-family events (hikes, picnics, game nights, etc.). This group is a great place if you are just starting home-schooling or have children at different age ranges.

Sustaining Grace

Size of Group - any openings?: Limited to 15 families. We are currently full for the 2009-2010 school year.

Age range of children in group: Ages 1-16 years

General Activities: We have monthly field trips. For our park days we meet twice a month at the same park within the Los Gatos/South San Jose area, but we choose a different park each month. Every other month we offer a Presentation Day hosted in the home of one of our families.

Day and Time of Monthly Mom's Night Out: We meet the first Thursday of the month, 7-9pm, September through May.

General location of group: We meet in a home near the 101 and 85 connection, Bernal Rd. and Monterey Hwy.

What makes this group unique?

Our Mom’s Night Out is a time of prayer & fellowship; discussing various topics based on the current needs, requests, and interests of the group. Though each of the families in our group has their own philosophy of education, with a variety of curriculum being used, we delight in sharing opportunities and personal experiences with each other as a way of enriching our individual homeschool plans. We thrive on supporting each other!

We stay connected and informed throughout the month via a Yahoo Group, which also serves as an archive for past meetings, maps and useful resources. The majority of our monthly information is sent out via email.

Though we offer a variety of activities from which to choose and love to spend time together as a group, we encourage our members to choose wisely and only participate in the areas you feel God is leading… areas that will enrich your homeschool experience, not add stress by keeping you busy.

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12
